CANTERBURY CT – David William Morrow, age 80, passed away on June 16, 2022 in Hartford CT.
He was born on October 11, 1941 in Ottumwa IA to Bill and Bettie (Wilcox) Morrow. He graduated from Ottumwa High school in 1959 and joined the US Navy. After basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago IL, he was stationed in San Diego CA and deployed on the USS McGinty (DE-365). He later volunteered for Submarines (The Silent Service) and became a sonar operator. His final position was that of COB (Chief of the Boat), which is 3rd in command, aboard the USS Augusta (SSN-710), a Los Angeles class submarine, launched on January 21, 1984. He was a proud submariner, as the Submarine War Force Insignia is considered one of the most difficult to earn in the Navy. He retired on May 31, 1987 and became a Security Guard at the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in Waterford CT.
He enjoyed history, his family, was a gentle soul and will be missed. He married Gloria Storich on June 4, 1987. She survives him, as do daughters Valori Newman of Lost Creek WV, Beth Hoffner of Pensacola FL, Donna (Gary) Huston of Georgia, three grand-children and one great grand-child, along with sisters Jane Martz of Eldridge IA, Polly Swartz of Ottumwa IA, and a brother, Doug (Vicky) Morrow of Ottumwa IA, along with nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grand-parents, Chet & Stella Morrow and Luther & Elizabeth Wilcox. Per David’s wishes his body has been donated to Quinnipiac University, Hamden CT for research. Special thanks to Bill Hoffner for caring for Dave and Gloria.
